This guide applies to standard massage shops, spas, massage parlors, Nuru massage services, and outcall appointments.
The answer before you book
Cancellation fees are common in Tokyo, but there is no citywide rate or deadline. The provider’s written policy decides the fee, the cut-off time, and how you must contact them.
If you arrive late, do not assume the session will end later. At scheduled salons and spas, your treatment often still ends at the original time.
For outcall or mobile massage, contact the provider as soon as your plans change. Once a therapist is travelling, or has arrived, the terms may allow a full charge.
Read the policy before you confirm, save a screenshot, and send a clear message immediately if your timing changes.

“What if my train is late or my flight is delayed?”
A wrong station exit, hotel check-in queue, or delayed airport transfer can affect an evening appointment. The question is whether the business can still use the time reserved for you. A therapist, room, or driver may already be allocated, so a fee can apply even when the delay was not intentional.
What to check by service type
| Booking type | Check before confirming | Late arrival may mean |
|---|---|---|
| Massage shop or salon | Deadline, rescheduling, no-show fee | Shorter treatment or a released slot |
| Hotel or premium spa | Notice period and percentage charged | Treatment ends at the original time |
| Massage parlor | Same-day fee and contact method | Reduced service time or cancellation |
| Outcall or mobile massage | Deadline, travel charge, post-dispatch rule | Full fee after travel has begun |
For example, The Ritz-Carlton Spa, Tokyo states that cancellations within 24 hours incur a 100% charge. THANN Sanctuary Spa Akasaka lists a 50% charge for late cancellations and 100% for no-shows. It also states that late guests finish within the original slot. For an outcall example, Enso Tokyo Spa’s terms state that cancellation within three hours, after therapist arrival, or a no-show carries a 100% fee.
These examples show the range. They do not set the rule for every Tokyo business.
Do online bookings have a cooling-off period?
Do not assume that an online booking gives you a general cooling-off period. The Consumer Affairs Agency’s English guide explains that mail-order sales have no statutory cooling-off provision, while other transaction types have different rules.
That does not make every charge valid. Japan’s Consumer Contract Act can invalidate unfair terms, and misleading sales practices are a separate issue. For a one-time appointment, check the terms before you pay, especially when a booking requires a deposit or card details.
Save these four items
- The price, course length, and any travel charge
- The cancellation deadline in Japan Standard Time
- The provider’s urgent contact method
- The booking confirmation with time, address, and your name
Late arrival: the clock may keep running
Many visitors expect a 90-minute massage to begin when they walk in. Fixed appointments often work differently. The next guest may already be booked, so the business may not be able to move the end time.
Aim to arrive 10 to 15 minutes early for an in-salon appointment. For outcall, check in first, keep your phone available, and confirm the address before the therapist leaves.
Message the provider as soon as you know you will be late.
A message you can send
“Hello, this is [your name]. I have a booking today at [time]. I will arrive at about [new time] because of [brief reason]. Can the appointment still go ahead, or can it be moved? Please confirm. Thank you.”
Keep it short and factual.
Outcall services: two extra checks
Outcall bookings require travel time and access to your accommodation. Confirm your hotel address, room readiness, and the provider’s service area before dispatch. Ask the hotel in advance whether outside massage providers may visit the guest room. A provider cannot override a property’s visitor policy.
A last-minute hotel change, incomplete address, or unanswered phone can make the visit impossible. The terms may treat this as a cancellation or no-show. Read that clause before booking.
Realistic Example / Mini Story
This is an illustrative visitor scenario, not a report about a particular business.
Daniel booked a 90-minute massage for 8:00 p.m. after dinner in Shibuya. He used the wrong station exit and then waited at hotel reception. At 7:40 p.m., he sent his new arrival time.
The salon kept the booking, but its next slot was already reserved. Daniel paid for the booked course, and the session ended at 9:30 p.m. as planned. The delay mattered, but the larger mistake was booking too tightly around dinner.
A five-minute checklist
- Read the cancellation section, not only the menu.
- Ask what happens if you are late.
- Check whether rescheduling counts as cancellation.
- Confirm the time zone is Japan Standard Time.
- For outcall, confirm the hotel, area, and contact method.
Quick FAQ
Is a same-day cancellation always charged?
No. Each business has its own terms. Same-day cancellation and no-show fees are common enough that you should expect a charge unless the policy says otherwise.
Will a flight delay automatically waive the fee?
No. Contact the provider immediately and ask whether a later time or another date is possible. Keep any flight-delay notice, but do not treat it as a guaranteed refund.
Can I still receive the full session if I am late?
Only if the provider confirms that its schedule allows an extension. Otherwise, expect the original end time to remain in place.
Can I cancel because I changed my mind after booking online?
You may be able to cancel under the provider’s policy, but do not assume a general online cooling-off right applies.
What if a fee was not disclosed clearly?
Ask for the written policy, booking record, and an explanation of the charge. Save screenshots and messages. Overseas visitors can contact Japan’s Consumer Hotline for Tourists at 03-5449-0906 on weekdays, 10:00–12:00 and 13:00–16:00. It provides advice in several languages, but it cannot force a business to refund you.
Final advice
Book with breathing room and contact the provider early. Clear communication gives you the best chance of changing the booking fairly and avoiding an unexpected fee.
